Why Women Make Better Business Leaders

inspirational speakerCareer choices for women used to be limited; now women can do pretty much any job that men can. Why then are only 12 of the fortune 500 companies run by women?

A compelling video created by the Online MBA, shows how the numbers confirm that women are not making it to the top and yet would make better business leaders.

The video, Why Women Make Better Business Leaders talks about a Harvard business review study that found that a business groups collective IQ went up when there were women on the team.

In fact women excel in 3 key leadership areas:

Communication.

Studies show while women speak fewer words in a day than men they actually have a better command of the language for getting their point across. For instance, Yahoos new CEO Marissa Mayer has been a driving force beyond the companies recent success and consequently their stock has gained 5.7%

Initiative.

Women in management take more initiative. Take for example Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo who despite criticism and the risk involved has decided to focus on nutritional drinks.

Emotional Intelligence.

According to Daniel Goleman, author of “The Brain and Emotional Intelligence: New Insights,” Women are more aware and inclusive of emotions and have better emotional intelligence than men. Meg Whitman CEO of HP, has been noted in psycology today for her skill in leading with Emotional Intelligence.

Women have extra challenges like balancing work and personal life and other hurdles reaching high level leadership positions.

As an inspirational speaker for many womens events I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing women in leadership roles. They have exceptional soft skills, they lead by example and have the drive and initiative to take people where they have never been before.

I recently spoke at a Go Red for Women event where the other inspirational speaker was Krys Bart, the CEO of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. I had the chance to have dinner with Krys the night before the event and was amazed at her natural charisma, warmth and insight into people. She has taken the Reno-Tahoe airport to new levels in her over 15 years as a CEO, including being named one of the top 5 most efficient airports in north america.

The OnlineMBA, who created the video, strives to encourage women to work for their MBA online. To balance work and family while working towards a degree- many women will find onlineMBA's a great option.
