The event will draw over 120 librarians, managers, supervisors and volunteers from throughout the Greater Des Moines area. After interviewing over 6 librarians, it does sound like the dream job.
Librarians spend their day helping patrons find books and electronic materials, check them out, they also organize materials and keep the library orderly. A large part of a librarians job has become organizing programs for patrons.
Thanks to technology, libraries have had to evolve alot. Most people can find the immediate information they need through a quick google search and many books are also available online.
Some people still prefer a physical book, and children are always immersed in libraries and learning to read. Others don't have access to the internet and other resources, so they rely on their library. Many patrons go to the library just for a welcome escape.
The local library is a safe community meeting place where people go to learn and grow. Libraries are offering great programs geared to engaging community members and using the public library space.
Like any public service role, being friendly and accomodating is job one. Some days challenging patrons can wear you down. I will be presenting the Motivational speech, I Love my Job, it's the People I Can't Stand! in the afternoon. The morning will be filled up with the humorous motivational speeches, The Nerve to Serve... Say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout! and Follow Me I'm Right Behind You.
