Nobody ever shows up for work and says "Gee, I sure wish this place were more serious."
Have you ever worked somewhere that was just too much fun? A workplace where actual work never happened? Where things never got accomplished because people were just too busy fooling around? This work environment would be rare. Instead, most fun organization are actually more productive because people want to participate. Employees are motivated to be themselves, to be creative, and to be productive.
From a productivity perspective, when you are having fun- you are giving off more energy than you consume and you have no choice but to contribute. It is almost impossible to maintain indifference or negativity when you laugh, so negativity dies a natural death when it's surrounded by humor.
Your emotions are positive and your stress levels are low. What leader wouldn't want this?
A typical work day can be long and tiring but if you choose to have fun the time flies by, just as that old adage says.
I once heard an inspirational speech from a humorous motivational speaker, Mike Kerr, where he suggested that fun workplaces are:
- more productive
- more enjoyable - time flies by
- more inspiring
