Inspiration from My Son, This would be Funny If....

motivational speakerHave you ever thought, This would be funny if it wasn't happening to me? I really get that now, thanks to my son.

It was November 7, 2009 I was at the Victoria Inn Hotel in Brandon Manitoba. The following morning I was the Keynote speaker for the RCCV Conference.

I was pregnant and due in a month. At 1:00 in the morning my water broke. I have never had children before and had no idea what to do(I hadn't done the Lamaze classes yet). I called down to the front desk and a man answered, I told him I was pregnant. I explained it was too early for me to be going into labour. Yet at the moment i had water gushing all over the hotels 300 thread count cotton sheets.

Their was an uncomfortable pause, then he put me on hold. When he came back on the phone he said, "Stay right where you are, I'm sending the janitor".  The Janitor? To Deliver my baby? I didn't know they did that sort of thing. I panicked and called my fiancé. Within moments their was a knock on the door, I looked through the peep hole to find a large man with a tattoo pushing a wheelchair.

I opened the door and the Janitor helped me into the chair and wheeled me down to the front desk ( lucky for me, he wasn't moonlighting as a midwife). There was a cab waiting for me. The cab drove me to the Medical Center where the health care professionals confirmed I was going into labour.

I refused to believe it. I panicked, We haven't finished renovating the kitchen yet, what will my fiancé say? I have to give a speech in 4 hours! As my mind scrambled for solutions my uterus contracted to let me know this is real.

I was in labour for 32 hours, I missed my Keynote Speech, my fiancé and my mom made it for the birth of my son, Branden.

He was born a month before his due date, I won't wait 9 months for any man.

Fast-forward a year and bit and now I have this amazing little boy who just can't stop smiling at me. He is so good natured, funny and an inspiration to me, except when he cries.

If motherhood has taught me anything it is that I am no longer in control (like I ever was). Life no longer revolves around me. As I speak about humour in the workplace, wellness and having fun at work I think the best inspiration is my son. He is just learning to spit out words and is not available as a guest speaker, yet.
