leadership guest speakerAccording to leadership guest speaker Lance Richards; by 2025 Generation Y will represent 75% of the Global Workforce. Often called entitled, misunderstood and lacking work ethic; this is also one of the most misunderstood generations ever.

Lance Richards is a leadership motivational speaker and author of the ebook Gen Now. I read the Ebook and gained some great insights into generations.

Many generational studies suggest that Generation Y has different values attributed to how they are raised. These studies suggest it all comes down to parenting, technology and education.

Generation Y tends to value constant feedback, connectivity, self expression and reward and recognition for work completed.

Gen Y are more open, self expressive and less concerned with privacy. Social media elicits immediate feedback and yet at work reviews happen once or twice a year.

Gen Y's in their personal lives value dialogue and informality ( and social media delivers). While many organizations operate in a top down, formal, sometimes secretive need to know basis.

Organizations need to engage in genuine dialogue with employees. Generically sent memos in the inbox about a change in corporate policy or simply changes to lunch breaks will be met with distrust. Glossing over the issue or telling workers this is the way it is, you need to accept it, just wont work.

Generation Y is used to being engaging in dialogue and expressing their opinion about everything.

To keep up in the global workforce, organizations need to embrace dialogue, engagement, more regular feedback and self expression.

Tips to optimimize the younger workforce:

Be open to feeback

Be transparent

Use immediate on going input

Deformalize communication where possible
