I was recently an inspirational speaker for a United States Postal Services event. The other inspirational speakers were James Burns from Massachusetts General Hospital and Betsy Shortell from Harvard University. The motivational speech discussed the qualities of effective leaders.
Qualities of leaders:
Attention to detail
Sets a clear vision
Not afraid to get hands dirty
Hold staff and yourself accountable
Be a resource
Ability to motivate
Establishes policies and procedures
Establish high service standards
Provides corrective action
Is Flexible and approachable
Is an industry expert
Is a mentor
Identifies strengths and builds on them
Fair and consistent
The motivational speech ended with a discussion of what it means to be a leader. The group agreed that a leader is a person who directs a team to successfully complete a goal.
- If we please everybody we are not doing our job.
- Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.
- Leaders are made, they are not born
Leadership is based on truth and character.
