I am an inspirational speaker for several leadership retreats this summer. This means half and full day workshops, which gives me room in my motivational talk to do some morale boosters - audience participation activities.
Several times in my life, I have been caught in a downward spiral of stress. My initial response to this spiral is to think "I can handle this! I am tough, and this is temporary."
I was doing a workshop about having more fun at work when a leader piped up and said, "When the work is done than we can have fun."
Corporate leadership styles have changed significantly recently. Leaders have had to evolve; leaders now need to seek discussion, input and listen to their employees, much more than ever before. Gone is the militant, authoritarian leadership style that simply instructed people to do things and they would listen. Now leaders must seek others' advice, engage them and include them in sometimes even inane and simple decisions.
One state of being is a state of play. At work we don't just 'do stuff,' we are someone.
I was a motivational speaker for a health care event and a hospital executive suggested he was having a hard time getting people to have fun. This statement said it all because you cannot force fun down someone's throat. This takes all the fun out it! To get people to have fun by mandating it will not work. Fun is spontaneous.
I was a stress management motivational speaker recently at a wellness event. The other stress management speaker taught the audience about Laughter Yoga. By the end of the motivational speech the audience was light on their feet, peeling over in laughter.
When I am an inspirational speaker for leadership retreats, I use motivational speech activities to keep the content fresh, to reinforce my message, and to involve the audience.
In this series, I am outlining activities that an inspirational speaker could use during a leadership retreat. To keep the activity relevant to the motivational speech, be sure to tie the activity into your message, theme and audience.
