On October 10, 2012 I was a motivational keynote speaker for the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Conference at the Boyne Mountain Resort. This event featured over 180 enthusiastic municipal treasury professionals from across michigan.
The municipal treasurer is an elected position. Being a public servant comes with it's own unique challenges- namely.... dealing with the public. To do this job you definately have to like people! Daily, treasurers will deal with public complaints, quiries and interactions regarding property taxes, municipal issues ( ie- a traffic light), volunteer boards and committees, and regular interaction with the municipal clerk ( also an elected position).
Politics get involved as it may be unclear who takes responsibility for what work, boundaries are not clear and chaos can result.
As the closing motivational keynote speaker, I presented a 3 hour motivational speech, This Would be Funny if it Wasn't Happening to Me, How to Embrace Change with Enthusiasm and Vigor. The time flew by as the audience was really keen to learn despite the late night cocktail reception and dualing piano event the evening before.
I also presented the motivational speech, I Love My Job, it's The People I Can't Stand! Designed to arm treasurers with some tools to decrease conflict.
