I was a guest speaker for a Health and Safety conference where the event thoroughly pushed health and safety standards at every opportunity.
One delegate announced during the coffee break that this health and safety stuff is overkill and bores him silly. I wonder how long it will be before he loses a limb in an industrial accident? It is just this, it wont happen to me complacent attitude that causes workplace accidents in the first place.
Some baby boomers remember when health and safety was common sense. You didn't have to be told to avoid mixing toxic chemicals without your safety goggles on. Now we have warnings for everything. For example, the hotel pool area displayed a prominent sign indicating no diving into the hot tub. Which means some idiot actually dove into a hot tub? Yes. And not just one but many people every year suffer spinal cord injury or death from a split second choice to dive into shallow waters.
My stroller has a label on it that says, "remove child before folding for storage". I hate it when I forget to do that.
When we were shopping for a microwave there was a sign saying, "do not use to dry pets".
The other guest speaker for the health and safety conference lost an arm in a workplace accident. He suggested that in one split second decision changed his life forever. A true warning for anyone who careless walks into work half asleep and operates heavy equipment.
When it comes to workplace safety, there are no stupid questions- just stupid people, so always ask.
