I was recently a keynote speaker for a group of association executives where they pooled ideas on how to find engaging, cutting edge industry speakers.
It is not easy to find guest association speakers who are industry experts and know how to share their message in an engaging and interesting way. Most industry experts are not professional speakers but they have years of experience that is invaluable for association members. The consensus with the association executives was their message is critical but sometimes their delivery falls flat.
Here are some ideas on how association executives can find great workshop and keynote speakers who are industry experts:
- Call your national association and find out who they recommend. Likely someone in the association will have heard the speaker before and can give advice on their message, deliver and the best way to utilize this speaker. Some groups have an association industry speakers registry you can browse speakers and topics.
- Scour other state association websites for their post program evaluations and find out who they hired in the past.
- Check industry hash tags on Twitter and Follow industry experts and state associations on Twitter.
- Put out a call for proposal. Ask for topics, industry speakers objectives and ideas that fit the theme and goals for your conference. This should be a neutral non biased means of determining best fit between conference goals and association speakers abilities.
