funny safety speakerWe are camping in Illecillewaet BC this week, and because I am a motivational speaker for safety events, my radar is on the safety aspects of camping.

Here is a list of some of the Stupid Things Campers Do to jeopardize their lives, their well being, and their good time:

Use gasoline to start a fire. It is an explosive...

Leave out food that attracts hungry wildlife...

Place their gear improperly in the vehicle so that it flies off the back of the truck...

Avoid proper maintenance on their vehicles...

Drive oblivious to road conditions...

Drink too much - then stumble into a roaring fire...

Bring gas stoves into the tent when it's raining (this can end lives quickly)...

Get too close to a camp fire with flammable clothing & belongings...

Fail to double check trailer hook ups or do function tests...

Set up their tents too close to the fire...

Dress improperly and freeze to death...

Chop wood near children...

Back their trailers over cliffs...

When I am hired as a funny safety speaker for parks and recreation events, these bad decisions make for good material.  We love to see the levity in other peoples' stupidity! The bottom line, however, is that safety is serious stuff.  Camping can be fun and a great way to unwind from the pressures of city life, but nothing can ruin a camping trip faster than an injury.

While camping is not my first love, it does give me some great material as a safety speaker at parks and recreation events.

What did I miss? What are other stupid decisions campers make to jeopardize their safety?
