How to Leave Your Work at Work

motivational speaker for HR ConferenceA speaker at an HR conference presented 150 ways to be more productive. The trouble is that even if you followed every one of them, you would never fully feel caught up on your work.

There will always be another deadline, another obligation or unexpected responsibility lurking around the corner. If you have just one more item to complete on the To Do list, it may take you a month to get it done. This is the ultimate conundrum today due to downsizing, cutbacks, increasing paperwork and regulation. Given the nature of the daily grind and responsibility piling up at work, how do you leave your work at work at the end of the day so that you can enjoy your family and your life away from work?

Forget the stress of tomorrow and learn to be in the present moment by having fun. You can shake off the stress of your to do list by simply having a good time. Think about the last time you had a great time and you will remember being lost in the moment where time flies. That is the power of play. Humor in the workplace should be number one on the to do list.

I was a guest speaker for this HR Conference talking about Managing Millenials and Gen Z, the youngest generation in your workplace. One of the issues organizations have is that members of the younger generations insist that work is not their life. More than any generation, they have a strong determination that workplace stress will not overpower their lives. They also demand that work be fun and meaningful. The good news is this generation is also the most productive.

Gen Y and Z may make some headway on their to do lists but they want to have fun, too. I argue that marrying fun and work together is the ultimate answer to overburdened schedules, diversity in generations, and the need for balance.

Encouraging and training people to be flexible and resilient, to live in the present moment, and to go with the flow will go far to increase workplace wellness and productivity. Humor in the workplace transcends stress.

If you can take yourself lightly at work, you can forget about your worries and you can deal with issues as they arise. Levity helps you do this.
