I am a luncheon speaker at a calgary event for the Petroleum Joint Venture Association on March 17,2011. This associations mission is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of petroleum joint venture relationships.
A petroleum joint venture is an agreement between two or more oil and gas companies. I think the nuances and fussing over details in contracts that joint venture analysts do can be stressful and challenging at the best of times. This profession requires scrupulous attention to detail.
Today I interviewed Susan Oliver, a contract analyst for a large calgary oil and gas company. Sounds like a large part of an analysts day is chasing down contracts (or being chased down about a contract). Some draft agreements can take years to get signed, because parties don't agree or their may be legal issues surrounding certain provisions. For a joint venture analyst it is all about too much work and not enough time to do it.
JV Analysts have to be a jack of all trades. On one hand they specialize in joint venture contracts but to do the job well you also need to have an understanding of the whole industry. It pays to have knowledge of gas marketing, mineral land, accounting, production and more. This makes JVA's a very valuable asset to the industry.
On any one day an analyst can interact with just about anyone in oil and gas. It could be a call from the feild, where a well is shut in, a call from an accountant asking why a bill hasn't been paid or a manager looking for details in a contract. Good communication skills are key to this job.
I am a luncheon speaker for the calgary event on the Nerve to Serve... Say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout! To help the Joint venture Analysts take themselves lightly so they can take their work seriously. When you spend that much time focusing on the details it is more important than ever to engage a broader perspective and laugh at your stress.
It sounds like a fantastic association of professionals truly dedicated to their work. The luncheon speakers for this calgary group in the past have ranged from feild experts, contract experts, financial experts and more. I don't think they have had a humor expert before!
I can't wait to speak for this brilliant group.
