Every year HealthLeaders Media chooses 20 people who make a difference in healthcare. I was pleased to discover that Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN, author of Speak Your Truth:Strategies for Effective Nurse-Physician Communication and Ending Nurse- to-Nurse Hostility, motivational speaker in the healthcare feild was one of the winners this year.
I met Kathleen when I was a keynote motivational speaker at healthcare conference. I bought her book ( Ending Nurse-to-Nurse Hostility) and was completley absorbed on my flight back home. it exposed bullying, inappropriate behaviour and backstabbing that can happen behind the scenes in many healthcare facilities.
As a professional speaker specializing in the health care industry, Kathleen shone a light on a dark subject and conflict that many health care professionals deal with every day. it is a real eye opener.
Since than, I have seen Kathleen is spreading the message as a nurses week event speaker at several hospitals. Some nurses find the message empowering and others get angry.
As a guest speaker, I beleive Kathleen is an inspiration. If caregivers don't feel safe to openly communicate with one another than how can they feel empowered?
Nurses are an advocate for a patient and their families during some of their most difficult times. The patients health is in jeopardy and without your health what do you have?
If our health care system is going to change it will take pioneers like Kathleen to make it happen. Leadership must be taking notice to nominate Kathleen for making a difference in health care.
