Times have changed, to see how simply turn on the TV.In the 70’s and 80’s we tuned into shows like Leave it to Beaver, the Happy Days and the Love Boat. The values that came through were family, friendships, hard work and character. Now we tune into Desperate Housewives, Who wants to Marry a Millionaire and American Idol. These shows tend to involve lies, deceit and quick, easy routes to fame and fortune.
It’s no wonder different generations in our workplaces clash.To appreciate motivation in the workplace means to recognize the diversity that exists between generations. Not all Baby Boomers, Generation Y are cut from the same mold, but many similar values and perspectives exist within each generation.
Baby boomers are hard working, they may sacrifice weekends and holidays to get caught up at work. Boomers are loyal to leadership and to the company. They are good at motivating people with traditional values like work hard for certain rewards( like time off, bonuses) or work is it's own reward.
Millenials don't buy it.
Graduation speaker Donna Satchell explained millenials appreciate levity, fun at work,they have a strong sense of entitlement and may job hop to go to a better work environment. Motivational talks about hard work and work ethic, doing what's right are lost on them.
They are not as motivated by money but like lots of feedback and recognition at work. They like change and are great with technology.
Motivating people today requires understanding this high maintenance generation and managing the differences.
