This month I was a motivational speaker for 400 school nurses in Atlanta, Georgia. The event was designed to help support and recognize school nurses for their dedication and commitment to schools and student health.
School nurses work for one school or more likely an entire school district. Thus, they usually have to divide their time to support the needs of schools and students throughout the district. Their typical day involves traveling between schools, administering medication and doing community outreach for health related topics.
The other guest speakers for the school nurses included workshops on healthy eating in schools, proper dental hygiene, bullying, signs to recognize a troubled student and more.
Promoting student wellness is challenging when the resources available to a school nurse and the needs of the students collide. There is just not enough time and resources to accomodate all students and their needs.
All of this adds up to increasing workloads and emotional exhaustion.
As one school nurse puts it, ""it is extremely exhausting trying to support children in need and not having the time, programs or resources to do it. You can literally watch children fall through the cracks and feel powerless to help them."
I enjoyed being a motivational speaker for the school nurses, with the closing motivational speech, The Nerve to Serve... Say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout!
