On May 8, 2014 I am a motivational speaker for the Vision Credit Union Managers Retreat in Edmonton, Alberta.
This is an exciting event as May 1 marks the merger of the Battle Creek Credit Union with the Horizon Credit Union. Ultimately Horizon will join forces with Battle Creek and will have to convert to the same systems, policies and procedures, and technology as Battle Creek. 7 Horizon Branchs will also have to relocate there members.
The purpose of the event is to inspire, educate and discuss leadership challenges that come along with a merger.
Like any change people are always a bit weiry of how it will impact them. The merger is great for credit union members as it offers economies of scale which benefits everyone.
Rural credit unions always face the challenge of staying competitive with larger banks. There is a lot of reporting and regulation that has come onstream in the last 5 to 10 years, leaving many rural banks struggling to keep up.
Keeping up with technology is also a challenge. Email money transfers, mobile me ( text balances), mobile web, smart phone aps, electronic signature and more are everyday technologies that customers demand, even in rural communities.
The structure of a credit union is one where members ( like customers in regular banks) have ownership in the credit union. Vision Credit Union pays a Patronage Allocation based on the amount of business they do, they pay it all back to their members.
Rural credit unions also find that members do still want to come into the credit union despite the technology that allows them to bank from home. The credit union encourages this and wants to keep branch traffic high.
I am looking forward to being a motivational speaker for the credit union, I will deliver the motivational speech, Follow me I'm Right Behind You. How to Lead and Influence Others. Following this we will do the motivational speech, the Nerve to Serve... say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout!
