I was a motivational speaker for a women's conference. One of the other guest speakers told her story about helping her autistic son cope and survive.
Monica is a single mom. She works full time and has two children. One of her children, Matthew, is autistic.
One day Monica volunteered in the lunchroom at her son's school. That day she witnessed with sadness her special needs son struggling. He was awkward socializing and she watched him sitting sadly by himself on a lunch bench.
The other kids pointed, stared and laughed.
Despite that she has two jobs, she made it her goal to help others see how unique and amazing her son is.
On her work lunch break she drives across town to be there at lunch to help ease her son into social situations. Repeatedly engaging him in social circles, she helped him shine in others eyes.
Matthew could easily fall through the cracks but he didn't because he has a mom who cares.
Happy Mothers Day!
