On September 24- 25, 2013, I am a Motivational Speaker for Southeastern Area Agencies on Aging. This conference held in Perdido Beach Resort, Alabama will bring over 400 aging service professionals.
The association serves all of southeast united states area agencies on aging from alabama to tennessee. The association was established in 1973 because of concern over national and regional issues facing Area Agencies on Aging attempting to establish viable programs for the elderly. The overall goal of (area agencies on aging) AAA's is to help seniors stay at home as long as possible and maintain dignity and quality of life.
The various state Agencies on Aging offer information, programs, support and advocacy to seniors and their families. For instance Area Agencies on Aging may provide referrals, respite care, legal assistance, caregiver support, benefits counseling, transportation, meals and more. Although many of the services they provide are specifically for low income seniors, anyone can get information and support.
Some of the challenges facing this group are consistently being stretched trying to provide more care services for less resources. This group has been affected by the Older Americans Act Cequestration whereby last year 5 -6% of budgets within the agencies were cut back. On October 1, many agencies will have further cut backs. Add to this the increasing number of aging seniors across america and you see how stretched agencies can get.
Serving low income populations with increasing thin resources is challenging. Most AAA are 80% federal government funded. The daily decisions that AAA staff make could be life or death for seniors. For instance, whether you provide someone a service or not could mean life or death to them.
The daily challenges for AAA Staff members may be mediating and investigating complaints from clients in nursing homes, to confirming in home service providers show up at a clients home and more.
I look forward to being a Motivational Speaker for the Area Agencies on Aging. On September 24, 2013 I will present the motivational speech, I Love my Job, it's the People I Can't Stand.
On September 25, 2013, I will be the closing motivational speaker, presenting the motivational speech, the Nerve to Serve... Say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout!
