Are You an Effective Leader?

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Wed, Jul 31, 2013 @ 10:20 AM

  • I was recently an inspirational speaker for a United States Postal Services event. The other inspirational speakers were James Burns from Massachusetts General Hospital and Betsy Shortell from Harvard University.  The motivational speech discussed the qualities of effective leaders.

Below is a list of leadership qualities, rank yourself (1- 5, where 1 = excellent and 5 = not so good) on how well you do each of the following.
When you've finished your self-assessment, send this checklist to your staff and let them rank you.
  • Qualities of leaders:

    Supportive
    Self assured
    Compelling
    Multi tasking
    Good listener
    Attention to detail
    Character
    Respect
    Patient
    Sets a clear vision
    Values
Not afraid to get hands dirty
    Hold staff and yourself accountable
    Be a resource
    Provide solutions
    Delegates
    Ability to motivate
    Establishes policies and procedures
    Dependable
    Innovation
    Facilitator
    Establish high service standards
    Provides corrective action
    Is Flexible and approachable
    Promotes teamwork
    Is an industry expert
    Is a mentor
Identifies strengths and builds on them
    Fair and consistent
    Provides tools

The motivational speech ended with a discussion of what it means to be a leader. The group agreed that a leader is a person who directs a team to successfully complete a goal.
Some of the other points were:
  • If we please everybody we are not doing our job.
  • Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.
  • Leaders are made, they are not born

Leadership is based on truth and character.

Inspirational Speaker for United States Postal Services

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Mon, Jul 22, 2013 @ 12:35 PM

On July 16, 2013 I was am inspirational speaker for the National Association of College and University Mail Systems conference.

The other inspirational guest speaker Ruth Goldway,  chairman of the United States Postal regulatory commission, gave a motivational speech about postal regulatory updates.

Goldway was first appointed by Clinton in 1988 and and since been reappointed many times.

The United States postal services domestic mail manual is apparently one of the most complicated documents ever written. While it may seem simple to get a peice of mail delivered across the country, it is actually a very complicated procedure fueled by policy, procedure, documentation and even politics.

Postal services in the United states is a 65 billion dollar industry. Although it is shrinking, it's still there. Postal services has lost 25 percent of it's volume in the last 10 years.

The guest speaker talked breifly about exogent postal rate cases, whereby the postal service can increase postal rates. This needs to be filed by end of August to the first week in September.

Thanks to email and other instant messaging venues, mail volumes have declined significantly.  The USPS struggles to make money and will end most years losing upwards of a billion dollars.

The inspirational speaker for United States postal services ended her motivational speech with the reminder that the USPS is an iconic institution. Unfortunately, current postal leadership is focusing on efficiency at the expense of innovation, brand dominance and strategic marketing. Nonetheless the USPS is a strong, successful institution.

Dress for Success and Build Confidence

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Tue, Jul 02, 2013 @ 11:11 AM

Life can be brutal in flannel. Last week I sneaked out of my hotel room in my flannel pajamas to quell my insatiable desire for a Snickers bar.

As the door slammed shut, I realized I had forgotten my room key. Locked out of my room, I slinked down to the Hilton lobby. A large event was taking place and people were decked out in satin and suits. I scurried to the front desk clad in flannel, suddenly feeling embarrassed, begging for my room key. After passing the necessary security clearance, they issued me a new room key.

I entered the elevator, avoiding eye contact at all costs, begging for a direct flight to my floor with no detours to pick up other passengers. No such luck. Every stop was more and more painful as I tried to hide out in the corner.

Funny how flannel can take every ounce of confidence out of me. I was a motivational speaker for a healthcare conference the following morning, where eye contact was not optional. Yet, dressed in a black tailored suit I felt a lot more confident.
