Motivational Speaker Malfunctions in Humid Climate

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Mon, Sep 19, 2011 @ 11:57 AM

My new industrial strength MAC lipgloss melted off my lips while I was speaking for a group of government employees in Hilton Head Florida. The air conditioner was broken and I could feel the sweat forming on my brow.

I don't live in a humid climate but the event reminded me how humidity reeks havoc on your hair and make up. By the end of my motivational talk I had lipstick smeared all over my teeth and mascara splattered on my cheekbones. My hair lay limp and lifeless against my head. Just in time for photo opportunities.

I am not exaggerating to say I looked like a complete mess. What a distraction it must have been for the audience to stare at a Version of the rocky horror show giving a motivational talk. Like most things I shrug it off but am reminded of the unique challenges of being a female motivational speaker.

Motivational Speaker for Government Finance Officers

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Tue, Sep 13, 2011 @ 03:54 PM

On September 16, 2011 I am scheduled to be a motivational speaker for the Washington Finance Officers Association Conference in Spokane, Washington.

The event draws over 500 government finance professionals from across the State of Washington and will feature several motivational speakers and motivational talks.

My pre-event interviews have revealed that government finance is not an easy job. Although it has taken a while for the effects of the recession to trickle down to the state budget level, it has now hit the bottom line full force. Shaving every last dime from an already skeletal budget is no easy task.

Another stress is dealing with council members. These elected officials may not have any significant business background, yet they are armed with the ability to direct their district's funding. Money makes the world go around! Putting money into one pocket usually means taking it from another, and balancing these demands and resources is not easy.

Added to this challenge, government finance officers are all subject to state audits, a process designed to ensure districts are safeguarding taxpayer dollars. State auditors review grants, make sure all proper paperwork is in place, process cash receipts, and audit system controls.  This is a great safeguard for public assets, but the time necessary to collect and explain data can have a real impact on the stress levels at the office being audited.

Government finance professionals do have the satisfaction of knowing their work makes a difference in the community, which is usually what calls them to this often stressful line of work.

As the closing motivational speaker for the government finance officers I will be doing a motivational talk about surviving and thriving change. It will be my contribution to keeping government productive!

Motivational Speaker Lost in the Dark

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Tue, Sep 13, 2011 @ 11:29 AM

I was scheduled to be a motivational speaker for the San Diego County Office of Education on September 9th.  At approximately 11 pm on September 8th, the event was cancelled. See our blog post, Motivational Speaker for Office of Education.

The states of California and Arizona and parts of mexico suffered one of the largest power outages in history, one that lasted close to ten hours and disrupted power across a lot of geography and affected over a million people.

The San Diego County school superintendent had a tough decision to make: hold out and hope the power would be restored or cancel this long-anticipated event. With over 1200 people scheduled to attend, he had to act fast. All schools and buses in San Diego had already been cancelled, so the impending fate of the event seemed inevitable.

Ultimately, the event was postponed. I am still very eager to be a motivational speaker for the office of education when the event can be rescheduled.

The planning committee, including members of VEBA, the employee benefits program who is sponsoring the event, is an incredibly passionate, dedicated and organized group. Everyone has worked really hard to make this event a success - which it will be, when it happens. It just goes to show how in the meetings and events industry, some of the best laid plans can be derailed.

I will be giving a funny motivational speech for the office of education staff and I'm sure we will have a lot to laugh about.

Ontario Association of Credit Counselling Services Conference Speaker

Posted by Jody Urquhart on Fri, Sep 02, 2011 @ 02:43 PM

I am a humorous speaker for  the Ontario Association of Credit Counselling Services conference on September 15, 2011. The theme of the event is Financial Fitness Forum.

I will be the motivational speaker for the credit counsellors during the awards luncheon celebrating members who have successfully obtained their Accredited Financial Counsellor Canada designation and their OACCS Certified Credit Counsellor designation. We will celebrate, recognize and laugh. I will remind the audience that taking yourself lightly helps you keep some emotional distance from what could be some emotionally draining cases.

Professionals in the credit counselling industry deal with a lot of stress everyday as they help their clients. A normal part of the job is to get phone calls and inquiries from people who are behind on bills, losing their job or being evicted from their home. In most cases people are so far behind on their bills that they don't know where to turn, which is where the credit counsellor steps in to provide emotional support and advice, and to help negotiate with creditors, provide resources, referrals and support in the community.
